Wipeout, Leadership edition

I don't know if you've had the opportunity to watch ABC's show, "Wipeout" If not, never fear, I inserted a video of it for you to watch. If you need a good laugh at someone else's expense, then watch this.

Watching this show reminds of some leaders I've come across in my travels. They go charging into a situation, all motivated and ready to get the big win. Only to get knocked down by the unseen obstacle. Of course watching contestants do it on a T.V. show is funny, watching leaders do it in real life, not so much.

Have you witnessed a leader get knocked down by unseen obstacles?

It is a funny show, but as you said, when we see leaders do a "face-plant" in the workplace it is anything but funny. The questions pop immediately: how did we not see this coming; why didn't we support their transition into the organization more effectively; what support is being provided, etc???

You raise a great issue - how are we supporting leaders so they don't end up looking so foolish that they no longer can lead?

Jay,
Thank you for your time and insightful questions. I've talked many times here on my blog about how as leaders, we need to be able to communicate with our superiors. Hopefully, in our workplaces we've established a culture of trust, thereby we can go to them and point out the "obstacles" that they may not see in their enthusiasm to get moving. The times I've seen leaders, "face plant" is when they did not heed the advice of others or didn't take the time to ask others about their opinions. Thanks again for joining the conversation. Much appreciated.

Greg
